Emergency Hotline:
+255 792 761 531.
Please provide Your Location, Vehicle Plate Number, and a brief description of the issue.
Ensure Your Safety
While waiting for assistance:
Turn on your Hazard Lights.
Use the Warning Triangle if it’s safe.
Stay near the vehicle, especially in remote areas.
Avoid Unauthorized Repairs
Please do not attempt major repairs yourself. Unauthorized fixes may result in additional charges. For small issues (like a flat tire), feel free to contact us first—we’ll advise the best course of action.
Who Pays?
If the issue is due to Mechanical Failure, we’ll cover all the costs.
If the situation arises from Driver Error, Off-Road Driving, or Negligence, repair and towing fees may apply.
— Check the Weather Forecast
Always check the local forecast before starting your trip. Avoid traveling during heavy downpours or thunderstorms.
— Drive Slowly and Carefully
Rain reduces traction and increases stopping distance. Drive at lower speeds and avoid sudden braking or sharp turns.
— Watch Out for Potholes
Roads in Zanzibar, especially outside urban areas, can be damaged or flooded. Potholes may be hidden under water.
— Avoid Flooded Roads
If you can't see the road beneath standing water, don’t attempt to cross. You could get stuck or damage your vehicle.
— Use Headlights Properly
Keep your headlights on during rain to improve visibility, but avoid high beams as they can reflect off the rain and reduce visibility.
— Maintain Safe Following Distance
Leave extra space between your car and the vehicle ahead in case you need to brake suddenly.
— Keep Tires and Brakes in Good Condition
Ensure your tires have good tread and proper pressure. Have your brakes checked regularly for responsiveness.
— Watch for Pedestrians and Motorbikes
People and motorbikes may use the road edges more during rain, increasing the risk of accidents.
— Prepare for Muddy or Slippery Roads
Especially in rural areas, unpaved roads can become slippery and hard to navigate. A 4x4 vehicle is often preferable.
— Carry Emergency Supplies
Include a flashlight, raincoat, water, and a first-aid kit in your car. A fully charged phone and a power bank are also essential.
In general, here's what you need to know about fuel in Zanzibar:
TYPES OF FUEL
Petrol (Gasoline) and Diesel are both available.
Most cars in Zanzibar run on petrol, but some 4x4s and larger vehicles may use diesel.
Only One Standard Grade is available. No Premium or High Octane variants.
FUEL STATIONS
Found mainly in Urban Areas: Stone Town, around the airport, and a few along the main roads to areas like Nungwi, Paje, and Jambiani.
In rural or remote areas (especially on the east coast or in the north like Nungwi), fuel stations are sparse.
FUEL PRICES
Prices are regulated by the Zanzibar Utilities Regulatory Authority (ZURA), so there's little variation between stations.
As of early 2025, expect prices around TZS 3,000 – 3,500 per liter (~USD $1.15 – $1.35), but this can change with global market conditions.
PAYMENT
Cash only, in most places. Tanzanian Shillings (TZS) are preferred.
Very few stations accept mobile money (like M-Pesa) or credit cards — PUMA is one of the exceptions.
QUALITY AND SAFETY
Stick to known stations like Oryx, Puma, Lake Oil, GAPCO, United Petroleum for reliable fuel.
Avoid fuel sold in bottles or jerry cans on the roadside, especially in tourist-heavy areas—they may be diluted.
FUEL EFFICIENCY
Zanzibar is a small island, so fuel consumption is generally low unless you're driving long distances daily.
Even a full tank (~40 – 50 liters) can last a week or more depending on your route.

They were flexible, adaptable, easy to reach and efficient in solving problems. Thank you for your great service! With a clear conscience we recommend the rental company to anyone who wants to visit this beautiful country by car.”
“Had a great experience with GetYourRide.rent. From the completely transparent communication 6 months in advance to the car delivery and pickup, they were great. We rented a Toyota Harrier for 6 Days. It handled the rougher roads well. If I come back, I'm definitely going with GetYourRide.rent again and worrying less than I did the first time. All documentation provided, Inc insurance.”
“The booking process was smooth and the level of service of this company is incredibly high! A company representative met us at Tembo House Hotel to deliver the car, handed us our Zanzibar driving Permit, toured the car, gave us basic driving tips and a map. He was very courteous throughout. Communication was always very fast and top notch.”
“Very good service, nice clean good quality car. I extended my rental two times and always hakuna matata. Price also very good. Car collected at the airport and returned at the same place at late time convenient to me. I left the phone in the car and they returned to me, very honest and friendly service. Will definitely use again and I highly recommend.”
“Excellent communication and great car. We had it for week and it was brilliant. Used it to go round the full island. No issues! They also gave us some good recommendations for day trips and boat trips. Hotel pick up and airport drop off was super easy and fast, they were also very flexible with times and requests! I highly recommend this company.”
“Definitely recommend this rent a car company. Everything was arranged for us before we arrived, like local permit, car seat for toddler, clean car. Car was dropped to our hotel at the requested time. We did not have any issues and the car worked fine. We drove ourselves to the airport and dropped the car at the airport parking. The company arranged to pick it up later.”
